Xmas travel dips in Pune

Pune city typically saw foreigners travelling in and out of the city around Christmas vacations. But that is proving to be a thing of the past.

With hefty spike in air and hotel fares (a five-star hotel in Goa quoted a three-night package touching Rs 1.10 lakh this season),Christmas travel has come down by around 30% to 40% across sectors. Consequently, foreigners travelling from Pune to other destinations within the country has dropped significantly, said sources in the travel industry.

A tour company manager in Koregaon Park said their company has booked travel packages for some foreigners based in Pune for destinations like Rajasthan, Kerala and Goa. “We have also received enquiries for Madhya Pradesh. Indians are opting for shorter trips (four nights) combining two cities, like Jodhpur and Jaisalmer or Udaipur and Mount Abu. Christmas rush, however, has dropped by around 40% this year as compared to last year, probably because many clients are making direct bookings to save additional costs,” the manager said.

Besides, there has also been a drop in the number of foreigners coming to Pune. “In the past, there was a good rush of foreigners travelling from Pune to vacation spots within India during this time. This number too has come down by about 40%. Each year, our company would expect a growth of around 10% to 20% for inbound packages, i.e. foreigners coming to Pune and going to other Indian destinations from here. There seems to be no such growth this year,” the tour manager said.
