Trichy Airport staff strike against privatisation

Trichy international airport employees union , a unit of the Airports Authority Employees UnionĀ  has begun a five-day fast protesting against the proposed privatisation of six airports – Chennai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Lucknow.

While the government claimed that privatisation was the best way to upgrade the airports to international standards, the union charged that private players would overcharge the airlines and services and the cost would be finally spread over the passenger fares.

In Trichy, the members of the union took out a silent candlelight procession from the air cargo section to the entrance of the main terminal and back and on Tuesday sat on a protest fast that would continue for the next four days to attract the attention of the government.
