Tourist spots in Nilambur to get a facelift

MALAPPURAM
Soon, Nilambur will be developed into an international ecotourism destination. The government has directed to prepare a comprehensive master plan for development of all major tourist spots here, as part of its ecotourism initiative in the region. Rs41crore has been sanctioned for preparation of the master plan.

According to Nilambur municipal chairman Aryadan Shoukath, the plan would be prepared by an internationally acclaimed agency.

The ecotourism initiative was formally inaugurated by chief minister Oommen Chandy in February 2012. The project was planned to link the forest area from Thusharagiri to Perinthalmanna with adjacent tourist spots, thus leveraging the tourism potential of the district by adding greenery to tourist itineraries. However, only a few development works have been carried out after that. “Now, we are planning a multi-crore project as part of the initiative, by linking all tourism centres in the region with a view to attract foreigners as well as visitors from other states,” he said.
