Tehri to become adventure sports centre

MUSSOORIE: Tehri is on the verge of becoming a premier centre of adventure sports. Residents of villages around the Tehri lake will be linked with tourism activities.

Chief Minister Harish Rawat stated this after inaugurating the two-day Tehri lake Mahotsav in New Tehri on October 15, reports The Tribune.

The festival is considered a fortune changer for the state government and especially Tourism Minister Dinesh Dhanai, MLA from Tehri, who is known to have old political rivalry with state Congress president Kishore Upadhyay, former MLA from the same seat.

The Chief Minister, while inaugurating the adventure sports activities at the Tehri lake yesterday, said he had reiterated his commitment to promoting tourism in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts. Now, tourism would be another area of earning livelihood for people of the region.

Dhanai said the Chief Minister inaugurated projects worth Rs 16.25 crore, including construction of a Rs 4 crore adventure sports hostel at Koti Colony under the Tourism Swadesh Darshan mega project, floating log huts project worth Rs 8.50 crore and log hut ecotourism camps worth Rs 3.75 crore. Besides, he laid the foundation stone for 17 projects worth Rs 56.75 crore in the district.

The Chief Minister also announced widening of the Mussoorie-Dhanaulti road and stressed upon promoting traditional housing structure to boost cultural tourism in the state.

He directed the Tehri District Magistrate to run the barge-boat at half the cost and reduce the number of boating licences to half for unemployed youths of the region. He also announced functioning of the Chinyali Saud airport soon and sent a clear message that he was serious towards the development of the region.
