Tamil Nadu’s HADP to develop tribal villages

The Hill Area Development Programme (HADP) will shortly play a key role in developing tribal villages located in and around forests.

Stating this to The Hindu here on Friday, the Project Director, HADP, Srinivas R. Reddy, said that the endeavour of the HADP would be to help them become part of the mainstream.

Stating that the scheme was likely to take off in about 2 to 3 months, he said that before putting it together issues relating to the Forest Rights Act, Section 17 lands, the role of the Central Empowered Committee would be taken into consideration.

Pointing out that the allocation during 2014-15 was Rs. 47 crore, he said that proposals for 2015-16 are in the process of being collected. In the proposals priority would be given for soil and water conservation, forestry, horticulture, welfare of SC and ST, development of urban and rural local bodies, roads and tourism.

Stating that a Butterfly Park has come up at Devala near Gudalur at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh, he said that a sum of Rs. 7.19 lakh has been provided for a ventilator at the Government Hospital here. Funds have also been given for the purchase of ECG machines for eight hospitals in the district.
