Shikara boats stop cruise

ALAPPUZHA
Majority of the shikara boats have stopped cruising in Alappuzha as they are unable to meet the norms laid down by the district administration with regard to boat cruising.

According to the District Tourism Promotion Council, there were over 80 shikara boats operating in the Vembanadu Lake and in the canals. However, only five to nine boats with the needed permit are cruising here now.

Meanwhile, a shikara operator said that it is not possible for them to follow all the strict guidelines the district administration has issued for operating boats in Alappuzha backwater after a couple drowned in Punnamada Lake in June. “These guidelines are not practical. So, the Collector should relax it, lest it affect the tourism sector,” he said.
