Scania to double India production every year

Mumbai
Scania Commercial Vehicles India, the local arm of Swedish truck and bus maker, plans to double production in India every year, a top executive said. Scania’s volumes in India will be led by its entry into the city bus segment next month and the high volume potential the inter-city luxury bus market offers, Anders Grundströmer, senior vice-president, Scania group, and managing director for the India operations, said in an interview on Wednesday.
“We are doubling our production every year now. We have a capacity to produce 2,500 trucks and 1,000 buses,” he said. Scania India established a manufacturing facility near Bangalore last year. It sold a total of 600 units of premium inter-city buses branded as Metrolink and trucks for mining applications in 2013, and aims to double sales this year.
Grundstromer said Scania, the latest entrant into India’s 800 units per annum inter-city premium bus market, has a 30% share. He expects the segment to expand to 6,000 units a year by 2020. Volvo leads the segment with more than a 75% share. Scania handed over the first of 120 super premium buses to a transport firm in Mumbai on Wednesday. Priced at Rs.2 crore each, with the super premium buses, Scania is targeting air travellers and those who use cars to travel from one city to other.
