Rs 1.5-cr infra boost for Bekal tourism

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

The Bekal tourism project has received a shot in the arm with Rs 1.5 cr being sanctioned to broaden infrastructure facilities like street lights, roads, and basic amenities for turists.

The Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC) had submitted a detailed project proposal to spruce infrastructure, citing that the existing infrastructure would be inadequate to meet expected tourist arrivals over next 10 years.

With nearly 3.5 lakh annual visitors, Bekal fort beach is the top choice, however Edayilakkadu Kavu and Monkey’s Island comes a close second. The BRDC’s proposal looks at creating amenities for visitors to these places.

“The houseboat cruises usually take people to Monkey’s Island. With Kerala Tourism trying to develop the region, pristine places like these need to be protected. To begin with, we want to construct a designated pathway so the animals are not disturbed by human presence. We also want to discourage feeding monkeys and prohibit plastics at the sacred groves. The money would be utilized to put up cautionary signboards, construct eco-friendly boundary wall and seating benches,” said a BRDC official.
