Red sanders seized at Kochi airport

Three Chinese nationals who tried to smuggle out 110 kg of red sanders were detained at the Kochi airport on Sunday.

The three, a woman and two men, hailing from the Fujian province of China, were taken off a Malaysian Airlines flight following seizure of the red sanders from their checked-in baggage. A large amount of currency, including US dollars, Indian rupees and Chinese yuan, were found in their hand baggage. The red sanders were valued at Rs 4.5 lakh. The total value of the seized currency and red sanders was Rs 24 lakh.

S.A.S Navaz, Deputy Commissioner of Air Intelligence Unit at the airport, told Business Line that though the Chinese nationals were offloaded, they were not arrested as the value of the smuggled red sanders, procured from Karnataka did not warrant arrest. The three seemed to be operating as carriers for a Delhi-based businessman. The carriers would have made around Rs 1 lakh on the contraband, apart from their travel expenses.
