Railways to move on to online fuel management

Indian Railway’s technology arm Centre for Railways Information Sytems (CRIS) is working on an innovative online fuel management system to check pilferage of fuel and bring transparency in its consumption. The cost of development is estimated to be Rs 20 crore.

Indian Railway spends about 14% or Rs 18,000 of its earning on high speed diesel every year.

Over the past year, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu Prabhu has emphasised the use of technology and the new fuel management system is likely to be a part of his second Rail Budget speech.

The Railways monitors the use of fuel and expenditure on diesel manually at present. This leaves a lot of margin for errors and pilferage resulting in excessive expenditure. Once the new system is installed, it would be possible for the same to tracked and managed online.
