Pilgrims desert Gangotri after last year’s tragedy

Market places almost deserted, very few devotees on the banks of Bhagirathi, stray tourist vehicles in the parking lot, and shopkeepers whiling away their time playing cricket -these scenes sum up the ongoing pilgrimage season in Gangotri.

One of the four dhams of Uttarakhand, Gangotri is still reeling under the aftermath of last year’s devastation in Kedarnath which resulted in huge losses, both to human lives and property. The current trend is discouraging and Gangorti appears to be witnessing the worst tourism season after the state of Uttarakhand was formed in November 2000.

This has come as a big disappointment for hoteliers and others involved in the hospitality industry. They had hoped that things would turn normal after the nature’s fury last year. But with not enough people visiting Gangotri, many have decided to shut their units to avoid high maintenance costs.
