No maritime university for Kerala

Kerala’s hopes to have a maritime university in the State may not materialise soon. It is understood that the Shipping Ministry is not in favour of allowing another maritime university as the first one in Tamil Nadu is yet to get over its teething troubles.

The Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Tourism had recommended setting up five maritime universities in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Vishakhapatnam and Kochi, with clearly-demarcated geographical jurisdiction. The committee felt that one maritime university is not enough to serve the purpose of maritime studies and research.

The Kerala Government had even offered 60 acres of land close to NH 47 in Kochi to set up a new maritime university. It is pointed out that more than 50 per cent of the students in the two maritime universities (one private deemed university) in Tamil Nadu are from Kerala. However, the Shipping Ministry is yet to see merit in Kerala’s demand.
