As the Nilgiris Mountains is one of the most economically developed mountains in the country, a Nilgiris Eco-Restoration or Eco-Reconstruction Plan may be evolved soon. This could become a model for other mountain areas.
The plan may evolve among other things a landslide guide of the district for the public for preventive and protective action, threshold limits for tourism, damming and other hydrological uses, industrialisation, monoculture and urbanisation, and a compensation mechanism for ecosystem services.
The Nilgiris was developing well in terms of tourism, monoculture, industrialisation and urbanisation.
But at the same time, it is also a vulnerable range in terms of landslides, soil erosion, water scarcity and urban pollution. So there is a need to evolve a restoration plan, say the organisers of the workshop.
