The new integrated airport terminal at the Goa International Airport, Dabolim, which was inaugurated by Union civil aviation minister Ajit Singh on Tuesday, will most likely be operational in January, 2014.

The modern steel-and-glass building with a sprawling floor area of around 64,000 sq m has a total peak hour capacity of 2,750 passengers. The building is not operational yet and still needs to be furnished and air-conditioned.

Dedicating the new terminal to the people of Goa, Singh pointed out that Goa’s tourism was very important for the country’s economy, and added that tourism and civil aviation contributed to 3.65% of the national GDP. “Goa accounts for 90% of the country’s charter air traffic. In 2012, Dabolim airport received over 1,000 chartered flights, which was a 45% jump from the previous year’s figures,” Singh said in his inaugural address.
