‘New closure time for bars will hit tourism’

PANAJI
The state government’s decision to restrict bar closing timings from 5am to 1am has garnered sharp criticism from Calangute MLA Michael Lobo. He said the decision would negatively impact the booming tourism industry in his constituency which is known as the party hotspot of Goa and requested the chief minister to reconsider the decision or else Goa will lose its tag as the ‘party capital’ of India. Nevertheless, he welcomed the decision to close down wine shops and wholesale liquor outlets by 9pm.

Addressing mediapersons on Friday morning, he said, “This will finish the nightlife. Why will tourists come to Goa? Our North Goa beach belt is fully dependent on nightlife. If this continues, there will be a 60 % reduction in tourists. The youngsters, who come on weekends to party, will stop coming. Goa is a unique destination because of its nightlife and party culture with numerous pubs, traditional taverns, discos and other nightspots.
