Mumbai has new terminal, but Delhi remains busiest airport

In the last four years, Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad got new airports or terminal buildings.

It is only now that the country’s business capital will get a new terminal (T2), to be inaugurated on Friday.

In 2009, Mumbai airport lost the distinction of being the busiest in the country. Delhi has retained the lead since that year, and will continue to do so. Statistics from Airports Council International for 2008-2012 show that passenger traffic growth for Mumbai airport hit a plateau and its global rank stayed between 44 and 48. Delhi airport, on the other hand went up from a rank of 50 in 2008 to 37 in 2012 as its passenger traffic rose from 23 million to 34 million. During this period, Mumbai airport’s passenger traffic rose from 24 million to only 30 million. In 2011, Mumbai handled 30.4 million passengers, which fell to 30 million in 2012, owing to factors like Kingfisher Airlines’ closure and Air India’s decision to move its hub to Delhi. Mumbai’s loss has been Delhi’s gain.
