Mangalore buses charge more with polls, Easter

This weekend, the poll season coupled with Easter holidays is making way for an extended holiday and private bus operators and KSRTC are cashing in on the same. While KSRTC is conservative by raising the ticket fares by 20% only for the additional Airavat and Rajahamsa services, the private bus operators have raised it by more than 100%.

KSRTC Divisional Controller M Mahesh said, “We are not increasing fares for regular service of Airavat and Rajahamsa buses. The additional buses will attract 20% excess fare. KSRTC has 113 Airavat, 92 Rajahamsa and 12 AC sleeper buses plying between the coast and the capital. The regular fare is Rs 650 for Airavat and Rs 550 for Rajahamsa .

Meanwhile, it is the private bus operators on Bangalore-Bangalore and Mangalore-Udupi routes that are raking in money. They have hiked their fare from Rs 750 to Rs 1,500 for Volvo buses. “The additional buses will have to return empty from Bangalore, hence we are charging double. This will be on till Sunday,” said a bus operator.

As expected, the regular commuters were not happy and said that the operators were looting them charging double for even regular services. “How can we make out whether they are charging for the additional service? There is no way to find out. If we ask they say the regular buses are full,” said BPO employee Praveen, who will be returning to Bangalore on Sunday night.
