Maha gives six months for new autos, taxis

MUMBAI
The state will give six months time to auto and taxi owners to bring a new vehicle on road after phasing out old taxis and autos.

Nearly 4,500 taxis and 14,000 autorickshaws will be phased out within a year, once the new rule for old vehicles comes into effect from August 1. The new rule states that taxis which are 20-years-old and autorickshaws which have completed 16 years should be scrapped.

“We are not doing it overnight. The entire process is spread over one year,” said state transport commissioner VN More. “From August 1, we will scrap the old taxis and autos when they come for the mandatory annual fitness tests. On an average, 400 to 450 taxis will be scrapped every month. But we will also allow the drivers/owners to get registrations of the new taxis done at the earliest.”
