Lucknow Metro to be flagged off on Sept 5

DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party will own up the Lucknow Metro project of the erstwhile Akhilesh Yadav government in a big way with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly flagging off the operationalization of the Metro train in Lucknow on September 5.

An 8.5-kilometer stretch from Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport to Munshipulia will see Metro trains running from September 6, which is part of the Phase 1 of the project, reports The Economic Times.

The Union Home Minister’s presence at the event will be a strong signal from the BJP that it was the Narendra Modi government at the Centre which contributed bulk of the funds for the project while Akhilesh Yadav as CM has showcased the Lucknow Metro as his signature project. Akhilesh and his father Mulayam Singh Yadav had, in fact, flagged off a trial run on the same stretch of Lucknow Metro last December.

BJP had attacked the Akhilesh government during the UP election campaign, asking why Metro trains were still not running in Lucknow.

Yadav had shot back saying the project was to still get the safety clearance from the commissioner, Metro Railway Safety, and accused the Centre of sitting on it.

The clearance finally came through earlier this month, paving the way for commercial operations to begin. The Centre has recently cleared a new Metro Rail Policy too, mandating private investment in such projects, in order to speed up future Metro projects. BSP leader Mayawati had criticised this policy.
