Lighthouse tourism yet to take off

BHUBANESWAR
A project to convert three lighthouses in the State into tourist spots by the Department of Lighthouse and Lightship under the Ministry of Shipping is hanging fire.

The department had decided to convert 15 out of 182 lighthouses across the country into tourism spots in the first phase under the ‘development of lighthouses for tourism’ project. Lighthouses identified in Odisha for the project in the first phase were Gopalpur-on-Sea, Chandrabhaga and False Point in Jagatsinghpur district near Paradip port.

Besides utilising tourism potential of the places where the lighthouses are situated, the Ministry had proposed to make them more attractive with landscaping, conservation work, development of amenities, solar power electrification and additional recreational avenues for which Union Tourism Ministry will be spending money.
