Lalit K Panwar appointed new Tourism secretary

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Lalit K Panwar (IAS) as the new Tourism Secretary shifting him from the Department of Minority Affairs to Tourism. Last week, the ACC had ordered Arvind Mayaram, currently the Finance Secretary, to take over as the Tourism Department Secretary. That order stands cancelled now. Panwar will replace Parvez Dewan who will be superannuating from the service.

Dr Panwar, a 1979 IAS from Rajasthan cadre has a PhD in Tourism and is known for his simple demeanor. An old hand in the Tourism Department in both, home cadre in Rajasthan and in the Central department, Dr Panwar has served as Director–Tourism and Secretary in-Charge in Rajasthan. He was the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of India Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (ITDC) from 2010-2013.

Dr Panwar initiated many initiatives in ITDC during his stint as Managing Director including a MoU with Hindustan Salts to develop theme destination around salt lakes in Rajasthan. The public sector corporation also set up a global tourism and hospitality university in Haryana. He also commissioned documentation of the history of The Ashok Hotel in New Delhi in a Coffee Table Book format.
