K’Taka plans to launch travel mart

The Department of Tourism, Government of Karnataka is planning to launch Karnataka Travel Mart, on the lines of Kerala Travel Mart. Karnataka Tourism is looking at launching the Mart this year, informed a top official from Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC). The objective of the Karnataka Travel Mart will be to showcase tourism products and destinations in the state.

Also, Karnataka Tourism plans to organise a tourism investors’ meet this year. The aim is to encourage Public Private Partnership (PPP) in tourism infrastructure development and create awareness about the state’s tourism potential. The Karnataka Tourism Department is also set to develop tourism infrastructure at coastal areas. The 320-km-long coastline of the state possesses huge potential for water-based tourism activities such as scuba diving, snorkelling, Beach Tourism and boating. The Ministry of Tourism (MoT), Government of India will provide Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for this purpose.

MoT has sanctioned Rs 50 crore for the development of coastal areas in Karnataka, said the official. The State Tourism Department will develop restaurants, food courts, recreation area, accommodations, jetties and signages at the coastal areas. It has identified 40 island and beach destinations, including Nethrani and Mangalore to develop tourism infrastructure. It plans to develop Nethrani, Mangalore and St. Mary’s Island as scuba diving destinations. This project work will begin this year and should be completed in a couple of years, the official informed.
