Kodai witnesses unusual lull in peak season

KODAIKANAL

Kodaikanal is witnessing an unusual lull these days as tourist arrivals have gone down considerably. This has its bearing on the local economy, with the hospitality sector the worst hit. Shopkeepers dotting the popular markets and streets are upset due to low sales, while taxi drivers are eagerly awaiting customers. The popular Bryant Park is getting fewer visitors and the roads are devoid of traffic chokes, characteristic of a busy tourist season.

These are uncharacteristics for the Princess of Hill Stations, Kodaikanal, especially at this time of the year. The otherwise congested town in April and May, the prime tourism time, is yet to catch up. Stakeholders of tourism industry put forth various reasons for the lesser inflow including water scarcity and electioneering. They estimate that the number of tourist arrivals has fallen by at least 30%. Shops, tourism operators and hotel industry are the worst affected.
