Kerala tourism circuit project off course

KATTAPPANA

The project to develop village and farm tourism at Anakkara, under the Spice Tourism Circuit (STC), is reaching nowhere after the completion of the first phase in 2009, sources say.

The project was to be implemented by the Chakkupallom grama panchayat, with support from the Union government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In 2007, Anakkara was selected as the STC station in Idukki district, after Kalady. Anakkara was among the 36 villages proposed to be part of an international tourism route connecting Nedumbassery with Madurai.

The project was aimed at building sustainable tourism infrastructure by promoting farm and village tourism. Anakkara was chosen for its beautiful hills and spice farms bordering Tamil Nadu. Its location between Munnar and Thekkady, planners thought, would reduce the pressure on the two main destinations. The project intended to promote local and traditional art forms as well.
