Kerala to use games village facilities to promote tourism

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

The state government has asked the tourism department to work on a proposal to use the infrastructure and facilities created for the National Games for alternative purposes and to promote budget tourism.

“We are exploring the possibilities of effective utilization of the facility for tourism purpose. Our plan is to convert a part of the games village as a budget category tourism accommodation facility,” Secretary (tourism) Kamala Vardhana Rao told Times of India.

The games village, located at Menamkulam on the outskirts of the capital, was erected on a 31-acre plot using prefab technology that can accommodate 4,000-plus people in 365 units. “We had initially thought of dismantling the facility. Later, it was decided that it could be retained and put to some alternative purpose. We are looking at various options, in addition to the tourism purpose. A couple of academic purposes are also on the anvil,” director of sports and youth affairs, P Pugazhendi told TOI.
