Kerala bets on Russian charter tourists

The Kerala tourism industry’s hopes of attracting more tourists from Russia in the backdrop of arrivals from Europe declining seem to have fallen flat. Of the 57 Russian charter flights that were expected during the previous season, only 20 arrived. In other words, of the 11,000-odd Russian tourists expected, only 3,000 arrived.

The remaining flights had to be cancelled due to poor booking.

“Initially, we had introduced charter flights from two destinations in Russia – Moscow and Ekaterinburg — to Thiruvananthapuram. But after two operations, the flights from Moscow were cancelled,” said an official with Sita Travels, which was handling the Russian charter flight operations in the capital. “Even though each of the flights that arrived had a carrying capacity of 200 passengers, we could manage to bring in only 3,000 Russians,” said the official.
