Jewellers back ‘gold tourism circuit’ proposal

Jewellers in India have strongly supported the World Gold Council’s proposal to create a ‘gold tourism circuit’ in the country, saying they will increase production of handcrafted jewellery to attract foreign as well as domestic customers to the proposed circuit.

Handcrafted Indian jewellery is a favourite with foreign customers and fetches a better price than machine-made ornaments. It also helps in generating employment, reports Economic Times. In its Vision 2020, unveiled on Saturday, unveiled on Saturday, the World Gold Council has suggested promotion of a gold tourism circuit to showcase handcrafted Indian jewellery. Jewellers said leading centres of handcrafted jewellery such as Kolkata, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Surat and Coimbatore could be promoted as part of the gold tourism circuit.

“These centres can easily be developed as gold tourism circuits and people can come and buy some of the exquisite gold jewellery from these places,” said Bachhraj Bamalwa, past chairman of All India Gem & Jewellery Trade Federation.
