Indians may drop plans to South America over Zika

MUMBAI

Indian travellers are playing safe with their summer travel plans to Latin America and Caribbean, courtesy the outbreak of the Zika virus.

While travel companies say it’s too early to say if Zika epidemic will affect bookings, enquiries regarding the probable impact of the same have already started coming in, reports The Economic Times.

“While we do anticipate an impact, our summer 2016 departures have not seen any cancellations so far. We continue to receive queries for the Olympics scheduled in August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,” said Rajeev D Kale, president and chief operating officer – MICE, domestic and sports tourism, at Thomas Cook (India).

On Monday, the World Health Organization declared the Zika outbreak an emergency because of evidence that the mosquito-borne virus is linked to a spike in birth defects.
