Indian golf to focus on tourism to drive growth

GURGAON

With an aim to increase the focus and grow the potential of golf in India, the Indian Golf Industry Association (IGIA) supported by the Indian Golf Union (IGU) and Golf Course Superintendents & Managers Association of India (GCSMAI) will host the 5th Edition of the India Golf Expo (IGE) on April 20 and 21, 2016 at DLF Club 5, Gurgaon.

IGE is India’s largest congregation of golf industry experts charting the roadmap for the Indian golf. The show dates and agenda were announced at an industry lunch held at the Constitution Club of India and was attended by Mr Suman, Billa, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism along with captains of the leading golf clubs in India, golf tour operators, real estate developers and teaching professionals.

Suman Billa, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism stated, “Golf tourism has not been exploited to its true potential as at present India gets very miniscule tourism income that can be attributable to Golf. The ministry is very keen on promoting Golf for the development of the overall ecosystem of tourism and would like to emulate the success of neighboring countries like Thailand, Malaysia and UAE. The ministry of tourism is developing a separate section as part of the Incredible India website that would feature some of the best Golf courses and become a repository for details about various facilities. He further stated, ‘The new tourism policy has been submitted to Prime Minister and suggests creation of a ‘Golf Tourism Promotion Board’ to drive growth of golf in India. We will also be focusing on marketing & advertising of tourist focused Golf events and become more tourist friendly.”
