India to introduce new tamper proof passports

DELHI

The ministry of external affairs is planning to launch new tamper proof passports to make it easy for both the passengers and the authorities to handle the immigration process.

The new passport will more or less look the same but will have an electronic chip containing identidfication data embedded in its back cover. This chip can only be sealed once with the signature of the Passport Issuing Authority (PIA).

Any tampering with the same will make the passport useless. The will also have all data currently on the second page of the paper-only passports. This includes photograph, personal and biological data (finger-prints), besides the country’s digital signature

The changeover is the new passports is expected to begin in early 2016. India Security Press, Nashik, has started the process for acquiring the necessary technology for the same.
