Illegal constructions a threat to reservoir

The mushrooming growth of private tourist resorts in the water belt areas of Karapuzha Reservoir in Kerala is posing a serious threat to the existence of the multipurpose reservoir.

Close to 45 multi-storeyed resorts are being built in the catchment area of the reservoir. Nearly 10 have started functioning. Most of the construction activities are reportedly against the norms of the Dam Security Authority and the Pollution Control Board.

Talking to The Hindu, Thomas Ambalavayal, secretary, Wayanad Prakrithi Samrakshana Samithi, said some property owners had encroached upon government land that had been acquired for the reservoir. Such constructions posed a threat not only to the existence of the dam but also to the treatment plants of two multi-crore drinking water supply schemes to six local administrative bodies, he added.
