Hoteliers urge govt to rationalize taxes

PUNE
Hoteliers in the country have demanded rationalization of tax regime, restructuring of policies and procedures and a higher involvement of the government to provide the much-needed boost to the tourism and hospitality sector.

The measures will not only help the hospitality sector tide over the ongoing slowdown but also pave the way for a more sustained growth of India’s tourism industry, the hoteliers said.

Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, August 22, Dinesh Advani, president of the Hotel and Restaurant Association (Western India), said high levels of taxation were a heavy burden on the hospitality industry and the practice of various states levying different taxes has distorted the tariff strategy of hotels within the country. He added that the government should step up efforts to implement the Goods and Services Tax (GST) that will help the process of rationalization of taxes applicable to the hotel business.
