Gujarat allows hotel managers to issue liquor permits

GANDHINAGAR

In a sea change in its ‘dry state’ policy, the Gujarat state prohibition and excise department will now give hotel managers with liquor shops the authority to issue tourist liquor permits to people coming to Gujarat from abroad or from some other states.

Such licences are currently issued by the local prohibition and excise inspector. The state gets close to Rs 100 crore from liquor sale and permits from liquor shops alone.

As per media reports, one will not have to stay in a hotel to get these permits. Those staying as guests with local residents will also be able to get these permits.

The department has also issued orders for ‘group liquor permits’ liberally to foreign delegates and those from other states coming for the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit and Pravasi Bhartiya Divas celebrations in January 2015.
