Govt launches national portal for museums

Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Shripad Naik launched the National Portal for Musuems here as part of the government’s plans to digitize the collections of all museums under the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

In the first phase of this project, collections of ten museums under the Ministry have been digitized. They are: Indian Museum, Kolkata; Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata; National Museum, Delhi; Allahabad Museum; Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad; National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi; National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai; National Gallery of Modern Art, Bangalore; Archaeological Museum, Nagarjunakonda; and Archaeological Museum, Goa, reports Netindian.

An official press release said the portal displays a part of the digitized collections of thse museums. More than 11,000 objects have been incorporated in the digital repository.

Apart from this a database of more than 2 lakh antiquities has also been prepared by the National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities (NMMA).
