Goa minister opposes MPT’s plans

PANAJI
Minister for environment and forests, Alina Saldanha, has stated that the floating hotels and marinas proposed by the Mormugao port trust (MPT) are likely to adversely impact the environment and the livelihoods of traditional fishermen.

The areas proposed for the marina projects are rich in biodiversity, while the sites for floating hotels may lead to the displacement of local stakeholders, such as ramponkars, magkars and small-time fishermen, Saldanha has stated.

MPT is currently processing two proposals of private parties for setting up floating hotels in the River Zuari at unspecified locations. It has also signed two MoUs with private parties for setting up marinas in the river.
