Global investors looking to invest in railways: Prabhu

Even as the government looks to push the development agenda in Indian Railways, investors from Germany, China, France, Spain and South Korea are already looking to invest in the sector, railway minister Suresh Prabhu said on Monday.

Prabhu was speaking at an event organised by Edelweiss — Edelweiss India Conference — in Mumbai through video conferencing. While he didn’t disclose the projects or the amount that would be invested, he said the investment from these countries could happen in the next few months, reports The Economic Times.

The government is keen to turn around the railways, especially with projects where it could involve investors including some of the state governments. The railway ministry is already roping in some 18 state governments wherein some of the projects would be jointly funded.

Also, the government is looking to invest in additional routes in the coming months. The priority, said Prabhu, would be some short routes where the viability is already established.
