Chandigarh seems to be losing out on being a favourite destination for foreign tourists in the region as their number has registered a downward trend over the past three years. Absence of initiatives by the UT administration is evident as no big events are being organized to woo tourists. Key projects such as theme garden are also running behind schedule.
Even though Le Corbusier’s buildings draw a number of tourists, particularly for academic interest, from European countries, the tedious procedure to get permission to visit Capitol Complex acts as a dampener. Plans like simplification of the formalities and setting up of a tourist information centre are yet to bear fruit.
As per figures available with the tourism department, the city received 34,130 foreign tourists in 2012 in contrast to 37,190 foreigners in 2011. Barely 40,000 tourists had visited Chandigarh in 2010.
