Entrepreneurs bat for airport in Doaba region

Doaba Airport Welfare Association (DAWA) has written to Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and Union government raising the issue of developing an airport in Doaba region for domestic connectivity for potential growth of economy and industry on the whole.

“Considering the region as the richest and biggest contributor to the economy in the whole of the state, the association members lamented the absence of such a basic necessity in the region,” argued the association, which has been formed to pursue the issue, reports Times of India.

Explaining why Jalandhar has to be on the air map, the association pointed out that city was the biggest centre of vernacular press In India, a reputed manufacturing and exporting hub for hand tools, auto parts, sports and rubber goods, valves and cocks, leather and surgical manufacturing and films distribution.

“In addition, Jalandhar is a hub of educational institutions and many thousand students from all states of India and other countries get education here. The city also has a major contribution towards medical tourism as it is hub of over 400 medical treatment specialty centres which are economically viable and are frequently used by people from different countries. In fact, Doaba region is also the region of NRIs as the highest numbers of NRIs are from this area and it is difficult for them to come by road all the way from Delhi,” the association said to buttress its demand.
