Don’t ruin Hills for petty politics: Mamata

KALIMPONG
The ‘original inhabitants’ of Darjeeling have made it clear that they want to have no truck with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha-led statehood stir. At a well-attended public meeting organized by the Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association (ILTA) at the Mela Grounds here Tuesday, the Lepchas cheered and clapped while Mamata tore into the Morcha leaders without naming them and lambasted their politics of disruption.

Mamata was at her conventional best at the meeting, organized to confer the “highest Lepcha title” of ‘Kingchoom Daarmit’ (Goddess of Good Fortune) on her. Clad in a green-bordered white silk saree, Mamata announced a slew of sops for the Lepchas and many measures for the socio-economic development of the community. As if addressing the Morcha leadership, she repeatedly pointed out that the Lepchas are the original inhabitants of the Darjeeling hills, a fact that was also stressed upon by ILTA president Lyansang Tamsang in his speech.
