Domestic flights operations at the city’s airport will be shifted to the upcoming international terminal once it is completed, which is likely by April next year. Although it is being built next to the domestic terminal, the new terminal will have a different approach road via Sector 48 with connecting roads from SAS Nagar and Zirakpur. The existing terminal, that handles 30 flights, will be put to some other use, sources said.
According to MS Duhan, the airport director, the new integrated terminal building will handle both domestic and international flights. “Domestic flights will be shifted to the terminal once it is ready”, he said.
A senior official of a private airline said the terminal’s the integrated operations would greatly benefit passengers. “The existing terminal has a limited capacity and can handle only 400 to 500 passengers at a time. Also, there is no scope of further expansion. The new terminal is expected to have state-of-art facilities that can address the vital concerns of passengers like night landing, better parking facilities, duty-free shops, quality restaurants and, above all, better domestic as well as international connectivity”, he said.
