Damaged NH fails to handle increasing traffic

The dilapidated condition of Chandigarh-Manali national highway is likely to affect tourist inflow into Himachal as deep potholes and dozens of narrow stretches between Mandi and Manali have started causing traffic jams.

As tourism in Himachal is picking up some pace, the traffic load on the roads has also increased. The winter season is over but heavy snowfall, extreme cold and rains have resulted in potholes on the highway. Even the road in Manali, which was metalled last year, remains damaged at many stretches. Being the main mode of transportation in Himachal, roads have now started annoying the travelers, who seem struggling to avoid fatal bumps, sources said.
