Cops ramp up security in Mysore for Dasara

MYSORE

In the wake of threats by pro-Kannada activists for choosing Jnanpith laureate Girish Karnad to inaugurate the Mysore Dasara celebrations, police are tightening security atop Chamundi Hills on September 25.

Police commissioner M A Saleem said multiple checkpoints will be created at the hilltop during the inaugural day. “We’ll frisk every participant at the entry point and will seize materials like black badges, cloth, tape or ink. We’ll take action if anyone violates rules.”

Kannada activists had opposed Karnad because he’s a non-believer and they didn’t want such person to inaugurate a religious festival.Police may frisk people entering Mysore Palace for the Vijayadashami procession on October 4. “Based on the suggestion of RAF personnel, we’ll use the lawn outside the main gate (Jayamarthanda Dwara) of Mysore Palace as a holding room before letting visitors into the venue. We’ll open the gate 30 minutes earlier to facilitate RAF personnel check every visitor,” said Saleem, adding that seating will be provided to about 15,000 persons in Mysore Palace.
