Centre to focus on spiritual tourism in Pondy, Kanchi

CHENNAI
The Centre will focus on developing Pondicherry and Kanchipuram as major tourist destinations, said minister of state for tourism and culture Mahesh Sharma, during his visit to the Kalakshetra Foundation on Sunday evening. He was visiting the foundation after inaugurating a Rs 5.5-crore science centre and planetarium in Pondicherry.
“After my visit to Pondicherry, I feel that there is a lot of potential there because it has got its spiritualism, scenic view of the beach, and now we have come up with a science museum,” Sharma told TOI. “We have proposed to make it a destination on the international map along with the North East. And, this time, the government has come up with a coastal circuit with an investment of 120 crore and Pondicherry will be a part of that.”The minister also said that Kanchipuram is one of the highlights in the national tourism policy, which would be ready in another 15 days. The temple town is one of the 12 cities in the first list prepared under the centre’s Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spirituality Augmentation Drive scheme to promote tourism across the country.
