BlaBlaCar does an Uber for interstate travel

KOCHI

An over 150% increase in interstate travel fares this Christmas has given a huge boost to ridesharing apps and websites, with many Malayalis living in south Indian metros ready to share seats and provide cheap rides in their private cars.

While interstate private buses increase fares every festive season by 50 to 60%, this year it has gone up from the regular Rs 1,000 to between Rs 2,700 and Rs 3,000 for a Bengaluru-Ernakulam ticket in a Volvo AC multi-axle bus, reports The Times of India.

Malayalis coming home from cities such as Chennai are now opting for cheaper rides on a seat- and cost-sharing basis, made popular by app/website such as BlaBlaCar and circulated through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.
