Andhra has no money to keep INS Viraat

HYDERABAD

The Andhra Pradesh government is planning to seek financial assistance from the Navy to convert warship INS Viraat into a museum-cum hotel once it is decommissioned.

The central government has agreed in principle to hand over the aircraft carrier to Andhra Pradesh. It will be stationed at Visakhapatnam, reports The Times of India.

Highly-placed sources said the government is keen to pursue the Navy to fund the decommissioning of the vessel as well as converting it into a museum-cum-hotel.

The AP government recently conducted a pre-feasibility study to understand the cost and viability of the project. Rating agency CRISIL has estimated that converting the large vessel into a museum needs about Rs 700 crore, which includes the cost of decommissioning.”Since AP does not have money, it is seeking partners. It will also ask for financial help from the Navy. In fact, the Navy can be the joint partner with the state in running the museum-cum-hotel,” a senior official told TOI.
