Air tickets in India cheapest in world: Global survey

DELHI

In India, air tickets are the cheapest in the world because of the competitive market in the country, revealed a global transportation survey.

According to a survey by GoEuro, a Berlin-based travel website, in India it costs just $10.20 (Rs.617) an average to travel 100 km on a commercial flight. This is nearly half the cost of flying in China and less than one-thirteenth the cost of flying in the most expensive country, Finland, where it costs $136.83 (Rs.8276.85) to fly the same distance.

Cheaper tickets in India are despite high fuel prices and airport fees, as airlines in the country are offering seats at prices that are often below cost. In a bid to grow market share, almost all airlines in India are losing money.
