Ahmedabad gets maximum arrivals on e visa among new airports

AHMEDABAD

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport has drawn the maximum international tourists among the seven new airports that were given the green signal for e-tourist visa in September. On August 15, Ahmedabad airport along with Amritsar, Tiruchirapalli, Jaipur, Varanasi, Gaya and Lucknow got in-principle approval for e-tourist visa for 113 countries.

In September, 31,729 tourists arrived on e-tourist visa in the country as compared to 2,170 during the same month last year, registering a growth of 1362.2%. As many as 228 tourists from US, UK, Australia and other countries touched down at Ahmedabad airport through the e-tourist visa system in the month of September. The largest number of tourists to avail e-tourist visa facility at Ahmedabad airport was from USA followed by UK, Australia, Canada and Japan.

According to ministry of tourism, the high growth in number of international visitors may be attributed to introduction of e-tourist visa for 113 countries as against the earlier TVoA (Tourist Visa on Arrival) scheme for 12 countries. “This was a long-pending demand of Gujarat to boost tourism,” said Saurabh Patel, minister of tourism, Gujarat.

Foreign tourist arrivals in September 2015 in India were 5.40 lakh as compared to 5.09 lakh during September 2014. Of these, around 7,290 foreign tourists came in Gujarat through Ahmedabad airport.
