Kolkata’s Sagar Island to be developed as tourist spot

KOLKATA

The state tourism department has identified a new tourist spot at Sagar Islands. The same could be developed with a new new beach reports Times of India.

The chief minister is scheduled to visit Sagar Islands and Jharkhali at the end of this month and officials of the tourism department visited the spot on Monday to prepare for her visit.

“There is a sandy spot that has a lots of mangroves and other trees that could be developed as a potential new beach spot. The plan will be presented to the CM when she visits the area,” said a tourism department official.

Officials said that once the plan gets approved, it would be included in the proposed tourism circuit project that the state government has planned on a 500-km stretch from Jangalmahal to Sagar Islands. The tourism department has submitted a detailed report to the Centre for the proposed project to be approved and funded.

Mamata Banerjee has been stressing on developing the coastal areas of the state as beach tourism spots.

The state government agencies had earlier mulled the possibility of including Sagar Islands into the NGRBA scheme with focus on solid waste management, sewerage treatment and beach development.
