KOLKATA
Ramsar Bureau – the international watchdog for wetlands – has expressed grave concern over the rampant encroachment of East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW).
Reacting to TOI reports on threat to the wetlands that are so crucial to Kolkata’s survival, and yet so fragile, Ramsar Bureau senior regional advisor (Asia Oceania) Young Llewellyn has written to EKW architect Dhrubajyoti Ghosh for advice on how to protect the endangered Ramsar site.
EKW is protected under the Ramsar Convention but land sharks have grabbed large chunks of it over the years to fuel the realty boom in Kolkata. TOI has relentlessly campaigned to save the wetlands, succeeding in saving quite a few from encroachment.
