The state government has planned to introduce the West Bengal Tourism (development and regulation) Act, 2014 and a new incentive scheme for tourism. The state tourism department is working on the plans and has prepared a preliminary draft, inviting suggestions from different quarters to prepare the final draft that will be placed by the winter session of the assembly this year to come up with the new Act.
Senior tourism department officials said that there has been a need to have a separate Act for tourism in the state. “Presently, there are no guidelines or policies whatsoever for the travel agents, hotels or others involved with the tourism industry as to what to follow and what not to do. Also, it has been noticed that illegal activities often take place in tourist spots and there should be prohibitions and restrictions on activities for tourist places. The new Act will contain all the necessary policies,” said a government official.
